What Is Superior Mesenteric
Artery Syndrome?

A digestive condition
Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) is a digestive condition that occurs when the duodenum (first part of the small intestines) is compressed between the aorta artery and the mesenteric artery, causing a blockage in the intestines.

compression
The compression causes partial to complete blockage in the duodenum, therefore, the patient can no longer eat and digest food. First complications are malnutrition, weight loss and starvation.

One-in-three
SMAS is only a one-in-three survival rate. Approximately .03-.013% of the population has been diagnosed with the disease, and of those 33% are diagnosed at autopsy.
